Tim,

The French authorities have been warned for this massive outbreak of Ceratocystis platani years ago, but didn't bother to monitor and take effective measures to control this nice gift of American GI's then.

So now they are confronted with the consequences of planting hundreds of thousands of trees of the same species within short distance of one another (root contact), trees which on top of this have also been maltreated by cutting of their roots and pollarding them over and over again.

I live here and the chances of getting work from it are zero.

There are too many secret hand shakes and greasy palms.

It will be the commune men(Local authority) that do the job. Around my commune thats the same 6 men that also repair the roads, paint the mayors office and put xmas lights up.

But i'm not bitter......MUCH!!!

I think the corrupt developed countries, those within the euro zone, are gonna see many a riot over austerity measures.:001_huh: Corruption is at the root of not only the deficits but discontent at large.....

Not good news though is it?

They have been doing this work for some time, the machines they are using are great big 360s that reach up to the top branches grab them and snap them off; hence no climbing.

This is not the sort of job that the likes of me will even get a sniff of. Not because of greasy palms but because you need serious equipment.

And what of the Heritage status of this once marvelous canal...is it affected by the removal of the tree cover ? Do we wait and see.

Interesting techniques they are employing....I wonder what the HSE's view would be. It clearly needs to be as cost effective as it can ....I hope they succeed in reinstating it to former glory !
