Quercus robur. Had to do ID tests last year at college too. I was overwhelmed at first, just too many to learn I thought but after a few weeks it starts to come naturally. I walked round campus a few times too, trying to recall the names, rather than sitting inside studying. Found that helped loads.

Buds in clusters at the end of the twig is a biggy for ID, at least for me anyway.

When you walk round with the Lecturer, take Camera phone pictures of the trees and change the names straight away. Then you can have a look on the train or whatever and you be suprised how much easier it is to remember them:001_smile:

A good tip is to learn the differences between similar species. Look at Quercus petraea as this is the tree you will confuse for Q. robur, these two hybridise to add further confusion.:001_tongue:

Personally I find the latin names easier as they are descriptive, and you can sometimes work them out.

If of course you know what the latin names mean.

Hiller "Plant Names Explained", is a good read.
