we have something very similar in our yard that was made for bagging topsoil but would do for logs too.. its a 3 yard skip up on legs with hole cut out of it and sorta funneld.. the bag sits on the ground and each corner hooks over a little handle thats been welded on each corner.. i'll take a photo tomorrow and you'l see much clearer...

The only issue I can see is that you wont be able to shake the bags during filling. You will get 20ish% more in each bag if you shake & fill. They then stay nice & square plus stack neatly. Also when you deliver them (the delivery will shake & settle them) they look full rather than under filled sad sacks.

Thanks Nick a picture would be great.

How do you fill up your funnel?

For the next load the yards owner and a good friend has suggested he fits a grab to one of his huge 360s. The grab was designed for something else but he is confident 'it'll be right'

We tried the IBC yesterday and it appeared to work well. All we did was get some used 1/4 ply, cut four sheets and fix them inside the IBC using cable ties. There are 2 bars that go across the top of the IBC that hold in the plastic container, so we cut them and cable tied them to the corners to hold the loops and then put a pallet in the bottom so that when you fill it the weight doesn't tighten the loops too much.

It should allow us to fill a number of bags at a time and save time with the teleloader because it's more efficient to move say 5 or 6 bags in IBC's at once rather than having to keep the JCB tied up all the time holding open the bags with the forks.

That's the theory anyway.........I'll let you know how it works after we've had a bash

for a few days

  • 3 weeks later...

I tested my funnel for the first time today and it worked like a charm!

Used the telehandler with forks to hold the bag under the hole and the skid steer with loader bucket to fill. The skid steer has plenty of clearance and height to fill so those arm chair doubters can suck my b@lls! lol

Drove into the log pile reversed back raising the bucket at the same time, span to the left and dumped the logs. one half full bag with only 2 or 3 escaping. It only takes two buckets and thats a cube.

Telehandler removes the bag and stacks or loads, fit new bag and repeat. Only issue is really i need 3 people to make the operation run sweet as otherwise 2 people will be taking it in turns to put the new bag on.

So just waiting on some new vented bags to arrive and ill get this 20 tonnes bagged in a day or so with no sore elbows or back! Really looking forward to next week rather than thinking of the pain! lol
