Otters

People say that there are otters in every river/stream around here but i'm still to see one myself.

My boss is using the pictures in a powerpoint to show the local community groups that our management methods work. We have a local group which are trying to take over the ownership and management of the site. They want to plant more trees on the meadows, fence off large chunks for year round grazing and the bench/fence repairs done using the timber off the sites. We don't have enough big trees to do year round repairs on the picnic benches or the fencing.

Lucky man. I have seen them wild on two occasions. Once night fishing, caught for a few seconds in the beam of a head torch. And secondly on Ullswater at dusk, a pair playing in the last of the sunlight, oh for a camera. In my canoe I got about 30 foot from them, before they disappeared into their murky depths. Magical things

amazing photos! i do the maintainance around a fishing lake, i often see the local otter (he loves the carp!) but the owner of the lake hates it.

he has us put up a fence (expert told him to use chicken wire topped by an electric fence, though as i warned him, the otter just chews through it, i re-patch it every week.

otters are rare here, less than 200 in the whole north west of france i've been told.

Our local Environment Agency wanted to remove a sycamore which was across the river. We got them to cut it off at the base and anchor it to a massive clump of Salix cuprea to create another spot for them to feed and potentially breed. They agreed so now got a 8 ton Sycamore complete with branches on the bank anchored with a 10 ton breaking strain chain and D shackle. When i get an oportunity i shall get some pictures but it is very overgrown with brambles so will be unlikey for me to get pics.
