were London planes planted to filter smog ? and why do you need a face mask on during parts of the year when working on them.

I've heard people tell of chippers having a wad of hairtype follicles stuck to the chutes after a lot of plane brash.

two problems. One, it wasn't exactly planted and two, it doesn't all fit in one shot. I think I took three shots last time and still didn't get it all. DrewB might have some better pictures as he's climbed it. Found a monster of a Totara the other day though. Reputed to be over 600 years old so I'll try and get some photos of that.

The young leaves are coated in fine hairs Les, they get in your eyes & throat whilst working with then from spring through to early summer.

The hairs wear off from summer onwards so not as significant.

 

Pollarding street Planes at that time year is not a job I would relish.

I've worked along the south coast for 11 years and only ever worked on 1 London plane, Not sure why we have'nt got them where I am could it be the salt air ?

Planes in summer are a nightmare to work on, I do not miss working the streets of london doing mature planes all day all week all year:thumbdown:
