Managing Trees with Decay & Dysfunction

Recommended Posts

Lapsed pollard, TPO'd Lime

Has there been any discussion previously centred on the irony of the situation where unauthorised work to TPO trees could lead to prosecution, but there is no compulsion within the current regs to require someone to dowork that might be considered good management. Or is there?

I hope people can understand what I'm trying (rather poorly) to ask there?

Lost an ongoing battle with time & the ravages of nature.

first & third shot were taken in 2008, others today

.

We've been trying to bring this declining old beech down slowly but the combination of Meripilus, Ganoderma, Polyporus & Kretzschmaria have done for it.

Most of it is now on the floor with only a small percentage of the original dead standing volumes retained as a monolith.

hi David

presummably it was the storms today that brought it down? did you manage to save the carved piece?

Howdee Nick,

It came down just before the new year.

Haven't come across the inscription yet, it may be underneath one of the fallen sections. We'll keep an eye open for it.

As you know, we left the majority of the canopy weight away from where the public had open access, but that has probably led to its early demise.

We would have liked to have had the opportunity to have reduced more of the branch crown but it was only last worked about a year ago.

Just not enough time and opportunity to bring all of these dead trees down in a more controlled manor.

We had very little tree loss during the weekends high winds but expect an increase over the next 48 hours.

How did Harrow fair ?

.

what a shame to lose it though, pics don't convey the shear size of the thing! any thoughts on creating some habitat nooks and crannies for the local wildlife?

not sure if you got it where you are but at about 1pm we had a mini storm come through, thunder, lightening, hail stones, high winds...we had 5 trees down...i was out on site at the time, apparently back at the office the wind had knocked a seagull of course and it got it's neck stuck in a fork in one of the trees outside the council building, security had to help free it, so luckily the bird was the only casualty.

our contractors reckon quite a few trees have come down in other boroughs, nothing your way?
