I remember reading somewhere about using a couple of rigging strops with prussics for balancing limbs when rigging. has anyone got a picture or has anyone spliced one up?

i bought 10 metres of EB braids 12mm from treeworker at the arbshow to splice but can't get my head around it now! :blushing:

Splice one end long enough to tie a Klemheist(spelling), this goes on the rigging line. The other end has a short splice which the krab goes into.

Mine are about 2 foot long not including loops as this is the length that tennex (13mm) works out at with the tail buried and meeting in the middle.

Experiment with the length that suits you.

cheers deerman... they sound a good idea. gonna splice a few up tonight.

The guy i was chatting to in the treeworker stand described them differently to that. i think he said to use a strop with 2 spliced ends about 5m long as the 2 anchor points then use prussics to balance the limb??

Hi Matt

Learnt a top tip from Rupe on here that I use.

I've got a length of 1 - 1.5m rope with an eye at each end with a biner in one eye.

One end gets choked round the log as per usual. The other end, instead of a friction hitch you pass a bight of the already tied off rigging line through a small cambium saver ring and clip the biner to that bight.

This acts as a nicely adjustable friction device, locking off under load.

Hope this makes sense.

Ps. Thanks Rupe

That's a system I also made, 3m is plenty long enough for balancing. Proclimber sell them pre made.

Was working on the STEIN rigging demos at the AA trade fair and we were demonstrating using the new 14 mm Yale Multi-slings (available from 13mm - 26 mm!) we had them both attatched to the main 16mm rigging line with the Klemheist hitch these were then roped off to the timber using clove hitches backed up with two half hitch's.

I remembered seeing a page on some other potential rigging knots think they might be an improvement on the clove hitch as they tend to bight down tighter on the log being rigged. have a look and see what you think:

Picket, Constrictor, Snuggle or Clove ?

I have no idea what these knots would effect the ropes strength but as they avoid the tight turns of termination knots used when working with Karibiners I would have thought they would be stronger? Does anyone know?

You can also set up a quick 2 leg balancer with no extra gear at all.

Pull a fair bit of rigging line to you, set the first anchor point with a half hitch, run straight to the second anchor point, another half hitch, and then tie the tail back onto the standing part of the rigging line to make the second leg of the balancer.

I have a biner on my rigging line, so I use a marlin spike hitch and spike the biner through it for the final knot, although you could equally use a friction hitch.

Quick, easy and secure. You do need a fair bit of line to do it though, so make sure there is enough left over to lower the piece all the way to the ground!
