Dead Wood Habitat

Just catching up on threads I missed...

The Belgian can hereby confirm that visiting Davids playground is well worth the trip  Some pioneering work being done there (especially when seen from a Belgian point of view, running decades behind ...)

And while I'm here, might as well post some pics of a park tree (if I remember well it was beech) in Ghent that has been gone for many years, but that spent the last 5 years of his life looking like this (at least one visionary deed over here):

Thanks for adding Tom.

Fine piece of work.

Is the sculpture inspected ?

I wasn't really involved, it was well before my time (I noticed it being there, but was still a student at that time, so my priorities lied elsewhere :blushing:)

The statue was just felled one day, so I guess someone decided that it was no longer safe to retain

Not quite deadwood habitat, but habitat no less.

Came across this Ash & Inonotus a few days ago, took a few shots.

Went by it yesterday & sitting on the bracket was a Lesser Spotted Wood Pecker.

Couldn't get my camera out quick enough, and missed a great shot

Went up to it and saw where the Pecker was starting to make use of the onset of the white rot of the fungus (last two shots)

Will monitor the tree & reduce if/when required.

Standing dead wood.

It does have a 'sell by date'

Particularly if it's a species like Salix

Here is a shot of the 'Monolith' from Oct 2008, it was reduced to that state approximately 10 years ago.

The last shots are from this week.

Mainly Ganoderma present & the red alien looking slime mold.

The feeding galleries show just how well this type of habitat is used.
