Tempest splitter

Has anyone on here got any experience with tempest splitters or ones like it?

Tempest Wood Splitter

I'm looking to build a splitter and this seems the most efficient system to me, but I've never used one or even seen one in the flesh. There's a few vids on youtube that are quite impressive, but actual user experience would be appreciated.

Thanks, Daniel

Not sure how it wil do with knotty stuff as never used one, on the 'tube vids it seems to laugh at aynthing they put on it though, and that includes some hefty oak.

I think I remember seeing the selfpowered trailed one for sale for $9000.- wich is about £5500? But I think they're a fairly new company and do not offer export. They might do though.....

Suspect it would want CE marking as well, that is not cheap.

Plus VAT and carriage although I appreciate you can reclaim the VAT and also get 100% allowance against tax as a limited company. So the tax man pays for 22% of it as well !!.

But what happens if it goes wrong?. Tempest web site seems to consist of that video and thats it.

Nice tool though.

You're right, to import one would be madness. I have no intention of doing so though, I want to build one myself. I'd build it as a 3PL model, or a tractor-towed trailer.

I was just curious if anyone has any experience with this type of splitter. I've been thinking about it for a while and had come up with something similar when I found this on ewe-tube. Surely somebody else has come up with something similar some time?

Can you see any disadvantages?

Size of finished log looks a bit big, aim for no more than 4 inch (100mm) square. A decent double acting hydraulic ram would do, the problem is making a strong enough anchor bracket. My brother tried to build a simple one using a 4 inch double acting ram he had about but it just kept bending anchor brackets.

If you have an enginnering bent then get stuck in but without CE marking it would not be legal to sell them I suspect. CE testing is far from cheap.

If you use such a tool as part of a business your insurer may be asking questions about make/model and then maintainence records etc. Air compressors need a 12 month safety check for example and a 2 year full check inside and out. Just thinking aloud of possable problems once you get one into use assumeing you want to use it as a log supplier.

about the only problem i can see is alligning the splitting blades so the split logs don't trap, and that wouldn't need to much working out.

i'm also thinking of a 3pl model. those tables look ideal for hanging over bags, or crates.

no more picking split logs off the floor....mmmmmmmmmmmmm

Have them wider at the exit side, a bit "fan-shaped"

But even if they would get stuck, it would only matter for the very last log, as the next one would just push them through.
