Veg Oil for Bar & Chain Lube

Tried supermarket rapeseed oil when logging firewood and thought bar and chain were hotter. Thought as long as bar was buried in timber, oil fling was reduced.

 

However, some colleagues been using both virgin SVO and used WVO in their saws with no probs which is logical given veg oil high lubricity, flash point etc.

 

But low SVO/WVO viscocity = far higher lube loss. Rape has the highest VI followed by corn followed by sunflower...

 

WVO is free and SVO much cheaper than Oregon et al at £45 for 25 litres (£1.80/litre).

 

Gonna try it and monitor keenly...

I think tommer uses used vedge oil with great sucess on his saws.

That link suggests veg oil could be used as 2-stroke oil... Now I know castor is well tried; think Dean has played with it until plug fouling... Smell reduction would be

what about mixing 25 ltr of each ???

I have tried a few different types and found corn oil to be slightly thicker than cheap veg oil.

Seems to work well on shorter bars eg, 12" on 200t and 16" on 260.... the 660 and 36" bar didn't like it!

costco have some veg oil either £20 or £25 ,for 20ltr drumm,may get some next time mix it see how it blends

I have been using vegetable oil for the last three or four years and have had no trouble.

Veg oil all the way. Even use it on the 088 when milling. No worries.

I use a 50% mix non-fling and veg, seems ok and certainly stops the bar oil hole from clogging.
