Took this dead ash down today in a back garden, it has obviously been ring barked:thumbdown:, but did this kill it or did something else get it first

 

there was some unusual colourations in the wood when ringed up but to this happen to all deadwood?

I'm no expert but that colouring is common in ash I find, though not perhaps to that extent. I would think it's due somehow to fungal activity as spalting gives the same colour but more intense and in a different way, i.e. jagged lines. Perhaps what you have is a precursor to spalting...?

not seen it in ash before so i'm just curious!

 

the guy who's house it was said the big crack round it had always been there:hmmmm2: but just wondered if a fungi/bacteria beat him to it?

not that i'm questioning you :blushing: but for sure?:confused1:

 

there was no evidence of fruiting bodies anywhere or is this evidence of fruiting bodies gone by?
