It a job to tell but I think its a black walnut. I cant see any terminal leaves on the long stems so it couldnt be common walnut, though many look like theyve blown away.

If the leaves are toothed at all then its definately not a common walnut.

The fruit looks rounder like a black walnut and the leaves too numerous and slender for hickory.

I would agree that it is likely that this is a Black Walnut Juglans nigra L., 'walnut' derives from the Germanic wal- for "foreign", recognising that it is not a nut native to northern Europe. The nuts are edible, but have a smaller kernel and an extremely tough shell, and they are not widely grown for nut production. The wood is desirable though and quite valuable.

Were the leaflets like this?

Note for future idents get better pics of leaves and buds on the stem. That alone is sometimes better for ident rather than just bark and tree form alone.

I went to look at a job on the weekend, previous tree man who qouted said it was a Prunus, the leaves did look Prunus like, yet it had yellow buds. It was actually a goat willow.

I'd say black walnut to.

As Steve said, this tree was in decline, the foliage is very sparse. The fruit certainly looked like walnuts. As the tree is roadside, and with phone lines running through it, I'm sure it had been pruned back heavily in the past, so it doesnt have a good form. The leaves certainly resemble your pic Dagmar, although it had lost a lot of leaf already.
