To be...Qualified or not to be...Qualified?

Thats my question!

Evening ladies and gentleman, I admit I don't come here as much as I should but I have been reading all the fantastic comments for my good mate who I trained with, tragically died recently, I take my hat off to you all; it's a dangerous job we do but it's nice to know how supportive the world of arborers are.

I came accross an arborer today, he did a good job, I anchored for him as being freelance since my training last year everything I do is text book so it was time to watch a different aspect. My life will become a lot easier adopting his working line set up!

Everything so far so good, weren't til we were cleaning up for the day we got chatting and I asked where he trained, he said did his 31 & 32 but the rest is time served with some bloke so not actually qualified (38 & 39). Don't get me wrong the fella was good but what implications could there be if the **** hit the fan? He too is freelance and has 4 years climbing and in my view very able but I seem to come accross this more and more and I some times wonder why I spent a bloody fortune getting my tickets. I thought you couldn't even (legally) buy a top saw without a cs39?

Would love to know your thoughts on this one.

Thanks

Deano

31 & 32 Are small and medium tree felling.

I wouldent use an un-qualified Person to carry out work Not matter what it is,As if it goes wrong it will be down to YOU for letting him do the work in the first place

So much for cs39 and stih'sl policy. Not to sell the saw to any one un-qualified But e-bay and other places step in to cover that.

I would get some one qualified in the future then you can be sure That they know what they are doing.

This is the point Frankie, no one has ever asked me for my certificate cards and I look forward to the day a customer asks to see them, truth is as you say; they wouldn't recognise the qualification anyway.

isnt it a way to prove you can do what your doing? insurance wont pay for nothing unless you can prove youve trained in the right field and a 'ticket' is the easiet way to prove it to anyone who asks

No tickets rquired here for insurance. Just go out, get insured (if you feel like it) and start cutting trees. I think Ive been asked once by Joe Public for evidence of my quals although commercial outfits require quals, experience, a H&S policy along with a set of procedures, first aid etc. Like I said before; there's plenty of mowing contractors here trimming and removing trees, some of which are way beyond their capabilities.
