Love the posts so far, Yes you are right, they are grenade size!! As for needles, there was 1 left inside, it was "borne" in pairs. Is borne the correct word? it's been a while since college (a year)

Very long about 4 inches. But it was brown and as I said it was all that was there. He brought 2 home with him. I have one in the garden and he has one in his. Maybe there are more needles on his but im sure its just a 2 needled one!!!

 

Keep posting, very unusual this one.

I have exactly what you have pictured here

 

Put the cones indoors near a fire or other heat source and you will hear them pop and crackle like the sound of logs spitting but louder as they open.

 

Mine were near my woodburner and I couldnt work out where the sound was coming from for weeks until I moved them and the noise moved!

 

In the Med you can hear it happening in the trees on a hot day - it sounds like a forest fire
