V.T.A symptoms "the chatty trees"

Recommended Posts

Was shooting next to this big Beech which when i started beating on the shoot was upright. I found out today why it is on the move. Badgers are digging the soil out from the tension side and it has Honey fungus and kretz on the compression side. I recon it may be over by the start of next season as it still has a very full crown all going one way.

You make a fine tree assesor matt:thumbup1:

Whats going on here then?........is it a shear bomb or am i an eeeejit?:001_smile:

No not shear, just normal maturation proscess, as the ripe wood region increases in size it gets closer to the surface and the active root channels start to define as they grow faster than the channels between (like butressing) and as with big old beeches often becom a series of channels and a discontinuos banded or columnar group as oposed to a smooth Atypical trunk, the roots fused at the base of this crack are relatively new in tree terms:thumbup:

EEEEEJIT!

Could it possibly be closure of an old wound? The rolling ribs of woundwood can be like "ram's horns" pushing against each other and potentially cracking apart in a severe weather event? (as described by Shigo)

Personally it looks low risk to me, but a bit of probing in there should tell you more about the origin and the prognosis. Looks kinda young to be dividing into columns--but I am a long ways off geographically, and may be a long ways off otherwise too!
