In my opinion I find this tree (or is it two and how do I tell?) (Fraxinus excelsior) satisfyingly 'safe' however as it is next to a kiddies outdoor forest school and near to a public permissive right of way I have been asked to make an appraisal by the owner. My initial thoughts are that the tree is hiding a crack within the union at the bifurcated junction. It appears to be laying down sufficient wood to hold the union? However the tree is suppressed by other trees in very close proximity hence the poor crown and very leggy stems. I would value some expert advice please :confused1:

Thats a good union, and no court would hold a safe assesment against you IMO, the only way this is going to be an isuue is later when age and decay happens within the old root crown and cones out the region within the welding.

but right now, I wouldnt bat an eyelid at it.

widen the area around the root plate to lower risk of interaction causing colonisation of the roots:001_cool:

Cheers trooper. Here's another for you. this Birch (Betula sp) was ring barked to make a monolith when carrying out some woodland management. I ask you not to consider the tree only the mechanics as it was a tough choice to make anyway. Accept that in my opinion it had to make room for others to mature and to provide a wood pasture. So this was ringed in Feb 2010 and only yesterday I went to see what flora was popping up and to make sure the area was fenced for the incoming cattle to mow down birch scrub when I noticed the tree had a full flush in the crown! Is this because of stored energy in the trunk as from my knowledge of trees she has no interconnecting xylem or phloem vessels at the point of severance? :confused1::confused1:
