Wollemi Pine

Saw one of these today for the first time.

 

Client has it in a pot in a sheltered sunny courtyard, and is wanting to plant it out soon, maybe next winter. Anyone got any recomendations regardign suitable locations or experience of growing these on?

 

Wickepedia says that these are surprisingle toloerant to cold and can cope with sun or shade so I dont think she has much to worry about.....butif anyone has anything to add I'd be interested.

Haven't planted one myself Rupe,

but this one is the other side of the front carpark outside the main house at Capel Manor Hort college.

 

Pretty exposed south facing site.

 

you'd think they would know what they we're doing.

 

 

 

 

Think I would of added a mulch personally.

 

 

The first one they planted at Kew near the orangery is fairly exposed as well.

i have 1 on my patio in a pot, its not quite as big as the one in your pic, it came from kew, the book that came with it says, it should be in a sheltered position in full sun or partial shade, to be planted in late spring after any chance of frost. if you like i could copy the booklet and email you a copy just let me know.

A chap i work for had one a bit smaller than that in a pot but it seems to have died this winter from the extrem cold which suprised me cause i thought they were meant to be pretty hardy

Thanks for the info, just the sort of thing I need to tell her to give her confidence in planting it. She has a south/west facing garden on a hill, quite windy but lots of tree cover around.

I think they are pretty hardy but this winter has been extreme.
