MS460 Big Bore - Magnum muffler

Right, having recently lost my job and having a wee bit of time on my hands I decided I wanted a little more power on my MS460...

 

So... I got hold of an aftermarket 54mm cylinder and piston and a Magnum muffler for the extra port...

 

Also got a tacho and a new carb so I could richen it up plus an 8-tooth sprocket...

 

 

Sadly no pictures, no camera :(

 

 

I got everything fitted and used the tacho to get the idle to about ~2750rpm, the set the high speed to ~13250rpm...

 

Everything seems fine but I'd like a little help making sure I've set it right...

 

 

I'll say one thing "SHE RUNS!!!" , I thought the saw was powerful before but bloomin heck!!!

 

 

 

Oh and the long term project, I added heated handles :D

What make is the aftermarket kit?

 

I was toying with a similar idea to replace the motor on a 361 that got damaged last year.

 

Was a bog standard one of a guy in Germany off eBlag...

 

Did any of the info help?

It's not that great, shakes too much and until Sony do another update keeps crashing my phone :thumbdown:

 

 

The saw itself feels great now, judders a little on idle but at full revs seems to just float in space like a gyro lol...

Just curious, but what made you set the revs at that, were you supplied with the info from the kit supplier, or are they the standard settings or something?

 

Got the rev specs from the Stihl manual and the supplier...

 

The clutch starts to kick in at about ~3000rpm, so 2750 is borderline, but happy...

 

I've had it up to ~13750 but want to bed it in properly before letting it out to make sure everything is happy.

Then again, I'm suffering with blocked ears from catarrh so I may have missed the 4 stroking :confused1:

 

Then again, you have to be gentle opening the throttle, but once going that's it, you choose either full or idle!!!:biggrin:

 

Top bloke - way to go, man with time on his hands - dangerous combination, post a video cutting some cookies, always interested in other peoples work

Took me about 2 hours once I'd got all the bits and 30 mins tinkering with the tacho, taking my time...

 

I've a 12" to 15" beech log to test it on for "cookies" :lol:

 

Will try this weekend, may have a camera now too :wink:

 

 

May have to fiddle with the oiler, went through quite a bit testing the saw, but after the fiasco with a blocked pump at least I know it's working...

My biggest worry wasn't actually the cylinder upgrade... It was the addition of the heated handles...

 

I sourced the flywheel from Canada as Stihl wanted ~£120 for a "specialist" part, it cost me £30 including shipping from Canada plus a spare wiring loom and spare generator...

 

The heating seems to work great, good for keeping my gloves dry :D

For some reason the saw seems to idle better with the heated handles switched on too, wasn't sure if the generator would somehow slow or "sync" the flywheel or smooth the ignition???

can you post a link to the company in Canada, I'm interested in modifying my 361 while i have some time on my hands

 

I hate to say it but it was a "one off" I caught on eBay...

 

The company in Germany I used off eBay was good enough for parts, sadly their English isn't too good, but Google translator works fine ;)
