LOL i was only ribbing you. Arbtalk is probably the best way though in all seriousness. Bearin mind though that there are now a phenomenal number of people getting into the industry, which for years hasnt been as popular (if thats the right word) as a career, and there is only a finite amount of work out there. Couple that with the recession and the time of year, and you will see why it is soo difficult to break into it. When i started in tree work about 14 years ago, there was 2 pages of ads in the yellow pages. There are now about 7 in cornwall (which is one of the less wooded counties,) and alot of people are puling out of the yellow pages too. A good way into it/ of finding work, would be to start on utility work. That is pretty consistent, and they have a high staff turnoover so jobs are fairly regularly available.

Thanks. Good reply. Its definitely a route im thinking of going down if i find the work easy and regularly. Dont know why ive spent years thinking i would have to employ someone to go it alone. Thanks for the update :)

god no, you dont need to employ anyone! i have 3-4 guys numbers who are all self employed be it groundies or climbers, who i can call on as and when i need a pair of hands. and on the odd time ive come unstuck ive posted on here i need someone for a day, 9 times out of 10 ive found someone :001_smile:

however, you'll need employers liability if you are employing people.....again, a grey area.....but for peace of mind its worth having. Some companies will offer you employers liability based on you employing someone for X amount of days per year, which saves you a lot of money

I wouldn't get your self PL insurance if you are only going to be freelancing to other companies. I found that when I had it people would use it as a bargaining tool to try and get your day rate down as you don't need it and will be covered by their insurance.

Plus, the only time I possibly needed it in a freelance situation, I was told that under the circumstances on the day the insurance was invalid as I was a freelance climber and not a bona fide sub contractor.

As Steve states, it is a very grey area. Personally I wouldn't bother but you will know the likelihood of doing your own work which of course you should have the PLI.

Good luck.

P.S. I would seriously look into Personal Accident Insurance though.

Thanks a lot. All good advice. I learnt the hard way about personal accident insurance a while ago! Im going to wait and see how much work i find in the area then take it from there. Be good to mix things up and re-kindle my passion for the work. After browsing through this wonderful forum i have re-learnt why i got into tree work in the first place!

If you ever need a hand give me a shout, based in Newquay atm, just starting out, was working for a local guy but he's back on his landscaping now. 24 years old, Tickets up to CS39 and have own climbing kit, no saws yet though. Some climbing experience and whilst i have a ticket to say i'm competent, i wouldnt say i was proficient but always happy and willing to work up a tree or on the ground.

cheers,

Ben

Thanks Ben. I havnt lived in Cornwall long so am not very well known yet. Good to know theres guys out there ready and willing though. I have needed occasional help for small jobs in the past so if anything comes along i will let you know.

If your stuck for work and can drive why not ask one of the larger company's. They often take on people with basic tickets and then train them up. If you already got 39 then even better. Probably power line work mind you but its regular and never ending.
