Like has been said Ben, swap the carb for one you know is good to isolate the problem.

 

You an spend hours messing about when it only takes a few minutes to swap, obviously if the problem is still there at least you know to look elsewhere.

 

I had one which turned out to be one of those faulty carbs

The carb boot is a push fit over a flange on the cylinder, a square plastic ring pushes over it and is visible from the top of the saw (about 1.5" square).

 

It connects the carb to the cylinder.

 

The other end pushes through the rear of the air box and has an internal steel insert ring and an external locator ring.

 

A leak will cause poor pickup and an increased or changeable idle speed, if left, the weak mixture will seize the saw.

 

This area is a bit of a pig to work on and a split boot is a common problem.
