The best drum chipper you can buy is the one that you can get full dealer support and spare parts for as if you can't, then even the best machine is useless when down.

Your choice in the UK is:

Woodsman from Liston

Bandit from Global.

The choice is yours, both are USA made, both have heavy duty build and both have dealers with engineers and parts departments. plus most important they both have full CE certs.

As far as I'm aware, Woodsman are no longer supplied through Liston, as ERM now have their own dealer in the UK. Besides, if you talk to a Woodsman owner about getting spares, you'll get an interesting reception.

As for backup from Global, there are a few threads on here discussing that thorny subject.

Vermeer probably have the worst chipper but the best service and backup.

Its a funny old world.

I worked on several Vermeer chippers in the States. It seems like in the last few years they have been designed by "Bean Counters" Rather than engineers.

If I were in the market for a 18" chipper and had the acess for it,I'd recondition a BC1800 from the late 90's.

Simple

Solid

Sold!

:bored: If Liston are not the dealer for Woodsman then I think you might want to drive past their depot as they have got three brand new machines parked outside or did last week any way.

I checked out woodsman chippers web site and they are listed as Dealer for Europe ?.:confused1:

Vermeer just seemed to have lost the plot.

Good engines and cutting units in the bigger ones. But the BC1800XL's got recalled in 2005 because the chassis cracked in PRETTY MUCH ALL OF THEM.A mate had one and the cracking was so bad it could have sheared off.

The electrical switches in the whole machine are junk, you need more than a few in your toolbox as they go too often. They chose the wrong switches for the linkage that actuates them.

The winch free spool and drive controll may as well be made out of "Play dough".

The year before that we had a BC1400 that was so problematic it would take pages to catalouge all the breakdowns we had with it.

But here are a few of the more notable.

Rocker cover came loose and oil went everywhere.

Engine mounting bolts fell out as nearly did the engine.

Clutch disintegrated (brand new machine)

Drive belt tensioner disintegrated (sparks and all)

All the above happened to a new machine over a six month period.
