Is ivy poisonous?

i know that ragwort is a badun for hourse , but never knew that chickweed was ? i eat chickweed in the spring .

Ragwort is nat as bad as some make out. I know a farmer who buys many acres of grass full of it and makes hay from it.

 

They say its when the stuff is dried out its poisonous, but hes never had a poorly horse.

again with alot of these things i think to be potent huge quantitys need to be digested for it to become sevear, we sell potatoes to a gent who feeds them to his shires, he claims that they will only bloat if they have too much.

During the summer we pull up ragwort every 2 weeks on the sites where we have hay crops taken. 1 day before the hay crop is cut we do a massive sweep of the site and remove it to our fire pit. it is left in black bin sacks so when the sun gets on them it turns them to compost or sludge.

Nearly lost my daughters horse this year thanks to a stable yard buying cheap hay full of ragwort then charging full livery cost. Thankfully now back on our ragwort free farm and recovering nicely but the permanent damage has been done to the horses liver and we now have to feed liver supplements to compensate.

The main problems are long term exposure to certain plants. Ragwort is classed as a dangerous weed by DEFRA and people have been fined for non removal from fields. It is illegal to make bales and sell with this inside and people have claimed for loss of livestock. It takes around 1KG to cause damage/death in large animals. It also causes liver damage in humans that pick the plants without gloves and masks. (Fact)

 

One plant produces over 10,000 seeds that will spread over several miles and remain there until the soil is broken. Some farmers use sheep to graze the land to remove the green plant but the poison is then in the meat for us to consume and the next season the stems come back worse.

where our horses are there is a large patch of barron land ! its covered in giant hogweed i blat it with roundup several times a year hopefully after a few years it will be gone but hell its creepy horrid stuff!!!
