Caledonian Forestry Services are the Palax Dealer nearest to you.

I have used the Palax 55 and it is a very handy machine. Honda petrol engine model is ok, PTO version is better(and cheaper) for obvious reasons. I have had a Honda / PTO Palax Combi MII in the past that was even better.

As for build quality, the gentleman who thought th Hakki Pilke was better quality must have been looking at a different machine to the one I used, I'm not knocking anyone else's machine but in my opinion Palax are a far superior quality machine for similar money. I know which one I'd buy

Does anyone know if the Eagle, 55 or 100 allows for double cutting of logs thicker then 30cm? A chap in the Large machinery section reckoned his Eagle wouldn't allow this process given the design of the spring mounted log holder. I assume there might also be issues with the guard protection design as well?

The Eagle (unless it's changed loads since I had mine) wouldn't accept anything bigger than 25cm diameter in either the saw otr the splitter due to the guards - think maybe at a push you could just a bout double cut something a tiny bit over 25cm but literally only a couple of cm more and it was a P.I.T.A - we used to quarter down anything too big diameter using wedges (very quickly saved up for the big vertical splitter though!)

Correct. It was me that said 30cm was the limit, but that was probably pushing it a bit. It could, arguably, be modified to allow it to double-cut something bigger but I wouldn't recommend it. It would mean handling a big lump of wood near a 700mm circular saw and would be dangerous and slow -- and then it wouldn't go in the screw splitter anyway.

Best to just accept that the machine has a limit. Any less than 25cm -- brilliant. If you're cutting wood bigger then you need something else.

Best wishes,

Dont shoot me for saying this but for an extra 2 or 3k a good used 1x37 would give much better output. Apart from the obvious 3k am I missing something. Those cone splitters I think are ok when new but wear fairly quickly then can squash your fingers.
