I run my saws on 40:1 with the Stihl stuff. No noticeable difference next to 50:1. It just gives a bit more lubrication. I`m not on a budget when it comes to looking after my gear.Any more and i think you`re going to get carbon build up all over your piston crown and in the exhaust port.

The previous owner of my 357xp must have run it on 1:1 mix then!! When i stripped it for cleaning the whole thing was covered in black gunk. The cylinder port especially!! Looks spanking now though!

same here always 50:1 chainsaw, strimmer and hedgecutter!

buy 5 lts petrol@a time and mix in 100ml:thumbup1:

I always do the same. Just use the stihl branded stuff. Was wondering if anyone else had been told about the 4 mix. I was told that i should only be using the green 2-stroke oil for the 4 mix as the red 2-stroke was not suitable for the 4 mix, whereas the green is suitable for 4 mix and any other 2-stroke engine?

A very good "mix" is what I accidentally discovered. I mix 1/40 Castrol TTS which is used in motorcross. I use this oil for 20 years now and never caused trouble. To this I add 1/3 of Aspen 2stroke. So 2 liters of regular 1/40 + 1 liter Aspen. This gives awsome performance, try it out !!:thumbup1:

Don't break it if it works. I use Stihl 50:1 in everything old and new. It has been formulated to work at 50:1 so not advisable to mix it differently. The biggest 2-stroke killer is wrong fuel mix.

surely if other mixes worked better, wouldnt the manufacturers be recommending it?

50:1 in everything, 5 ltr exactly of petrol, one still oil shot washed out with fuel from tank gives a perfect mix!

A lot of the reason they say use 25-1 with other oils is to make you doubt the quality of other oils, the same way that hotpoint would tell you to only use genuine hotpoint spares in their washing machines. That said, I still wouldnt go for the filling station cheapies.

Unless you're running in a really hot environment running at a stronger oil mix isn't really necessary, unless your saw is starting to lose compression and you're trying to scrape a few more weeks out of it...

Nope - it just adds a level of protection against air leak and poorly adjusted carb lean seizure.

Spud

but if the make of your saw is listed in the handbook to run on 50:1

then you should do that,if you run on 40:1,yes more lubrication, but also the saw will run more smokey[hence burning more oil]and also sooting up the plug!

My understanding is that it doesn't matter what the brand of oil is as long as it carries the JASO FB specification it will be sound for a 50:1 mix and be as good as if not better than Stihls red stuff.
