You said that before steve I think you were pretty horrified i had been using one a lanyard for years but If its used for ascending I dont see it as an issue with it on a lanyard it never gave me any grief at all unlike the cams on a positioner.

The mk 2 is a lot more hostile on your ropes!!

found this on the tree tools web site interestingly only ropeman im using is on a wire core so should be ok!!

 

The Ropeman fell from grace with tree climbers following a number of tests conducted by concerned safety authorities, the HSE in England in particular. Ideally a 'rope clamp', like a prussic knot, should slide on the rope when somewhere between 2.5 kN and 6 kN of static force is applied - the Ropeman didn't slip at all and severed the rope sheath completely at 4 kN. (See table below - Ropeman HSE Review available for download here - full HSE Report here). Not an encouraging test result for Wild Country!

 

 

It's thought the Ropeman's sheath severing ability is due to the aggressive horizontal tooth pattern on the cam and the way the cam utilizes the relatively thin bar of the carabiner as a base for the cam when its under load. To be fair, Wild Country responded to these concerns and developed the Ropeman II which is a significant improvement over the Ropeman I on thinner diameter ropes - 8.5-11mm.

so how come the 3 is ok but the 2 is a nono,, my 2 has arrived, and i'm looking forward to trying it out,,it's really no different from using a full ascender,, just less metalwork? or am i mistaken,,

It's more the 1 ad,unlike the 2 and I am guessing 3 it had ridges instead of teeth that bit in to ropes and severed them under extreme loads , I only used it for work positioning and not in my primary life line so never saw the problem.

I'm confused!

 

I've been using the Mk1 with some 11mm rope as my positional strop for over a year with no problems, I've not noticed any wear on the rope. (Mind you I get through a lot of 11mm rope due to silky nicks)

 

So is the Mk2 better or worse for the rope?
