I'm not dead certain but are you using the right grade of oil? You could try looking it up at

http://ew5.earlweb.com/search.php?site=6

ihave an original bobcat manual and it specs universal oil (10w30).this is what i have used. does anyone know what the effect of using ordinary hydraulic oil would be? would it damage the pump?

Now you have said that, my money is on the filter

so is mine. still waiting for the filter to turn up

The oil can froth / go milky when the oil has to be forced through the filter as its well past needing changing.

the old oil was quite milky

We have a 1997 bobcat 751. The man who serviced it said to use engine lube which we have done. we have never changed it but done the hyd filter every 200 hrs when a hose blows on a tool generally changes the oil for us. We have had problems with poor running on the engine when cold I think there is a brass pick up weight in the tank with gauze and it ices up when it touches any water in the tank.

I've had cold starting problems when temp is -10 or below. I find a bucket of hot water tipped slowly over the injector pipes works wonders

finally got the new filter delivered.

the old filter was seized on solid so had to remove complete filter housing and work it off with the bench vice and a big set of stilsons.

the old filter was choc full of muck, fragments of grit, baling twine and bits of old clutch plate. filter looked very distorted and partially ripped.

also found a large loose metal fragment (from old clutch plate?) next to the non return valve. arms had been creeping down recently so hopefully that has cured the problem

all cleaned up and ready to reinstall tomorrow with new pipes as well.
