This makes me so angry, will some one please explain to my on what grounds the AA can hold such a monopoly, this is a form of "cartel"

I'm betting the council cannot be 4rsed doing the paperwork checks themselves, and so choosing an aa contractor/consultant is the best option for them......"it's easy"

On this years Rights of Way contract in Devon, for the first time, you couldn't use a chainsaw unless you were a member of the AA or ISA. Does every council now adopt this policy? This is despite needing to see every certificate under the sun and more.

Let them have their council work. What they gain on the contract will be lost in the constant screwing around that seems to be associated with local authority work.

so why not stipulate that it is a requirement to have AAAC, or an equivalent alternative, showing that all current requirements are met, eg the ISO standards. I can see in this day and age that a council doesnt want the hassle of paper-chasing to ensure the trades are fully compliant, and that AAAC helps them with this. But with no other UK Arb-related association big enough why would they consider anything else?

Totally agree....What I am saying is that the "equivalent alternative" will need to show that they have the same checks ie. LOLER, First Aid, Insurance, Quals bla bla bla.........as an AA contractor/consultant.

 

The COUNCIL will then need to use valuable time checking that all of these documents are actually valid and in date, in order that they are not liable should something go pearshaped.

 

Much easier to say that the AA assure the quality of these contractors/consultants 'your honour'....speak to them.

The council can simple draw up a very tight specification for all contractors, which states all the requirements, H&S , waste control, etc, its not rocket science.

 

This will open the work to far more contractors, more competition, better prices, OUR money will go further, so more work can be done or maybe lower council tax!, no sorry I'm being silly now.
