Excellent thread!

I'm an active fundraiser for the Fishermans Mission and have been on a few of the Newlyn Beam Trawler fleet and have witnessed first hand the wastage policed by DEFRA altho back then it was MAFF. Defras fishing rule book is a sight to behold; Moses managed to get 10 rules for the world on two stone tablets; Defra would have needed a whole quarries worth. Quotas quotas quotas - days at sea limited for UK trawlers so that French and Spanish Purse Seiners can come and take their pick from OUR waters! Not only that, the flippin quotas change whilst at sea so you don't even know whether you've over or under caught a particular species... Bollocks to Brussels I say. PLUS - Defra scientists get thier data from skippers log books -needless to say thier picture of what goes on in the oceans is complete rubbish.

Absolute sacrilege. Also the fact that there's nowt left to catch in Cardigan Bay after the beam trawlers have been through and ripped up the sea bed taking everything out.

It's about time we used all those millions of old tyres to build reefs...rant over:001_smile:

Don't moan about beamers until you know exactly how they work. You wouldn't enjoy your fish and chips without them.

I don't buy fish and chips...my little protest:001_smile:

I do know that after they've worked the area I fish you can't catch a ray or very little else. I don't have a problem with commercial fishing I just wish they'd leave the inshore areas alone. I've been told it's mostly foreign trawlers doing this:confused1:

Lee, I heard this elsewhere and it disgusted me that they are forced to chuck it back or be fined for overfishing or catching the wrong stuff. What a stupid waste!

10 ton of fish is 10 ton of fish in my book regardless how big they are, its not the tiny fish that go back dead its the fish just undersize as a rule, drives me crazy, we should increase net size and change the pattern imo, or in our waters, longline fish

Precisely - UK boats not allowed to fish within 12 mile limit.

Most cod and haddock served up in the British chippy comes from sustainable sources, Norwegian and Icelandic waters, I do understand your point all the same...

Except that they are rapidly changing to Pollock! Notice how pollock was dirt cheap at first but now the price is inching up as Jo Public hasn't spotted it in his supermarket breaded fish!

Below is a pic of the beamer I was on and the skipper, Roger. He died recently; he was the most fantastic man.
