Winches and loler?

Ok sorry I didn't mean this to get out of hand. I have a job on tomorrow subbed in to winch timber around a site and just checking if I might be asked about loler etc. Thanks for all comments. Ed

local big utility company have everything loler'd even the handles to get into their tractors they dont have their winches loler'd as its not required,

If you don’t have a clue what I have said or cannot comprehend its merits and when something becomes a lifting exercise even when its still in contact with the ground or how when at an angle of >45deg that the predominant force becomes gravity acting agenised an object then carry on.

 

As to how you say “inappropriate standard” implying that somehow that applying lifting regulations on top of any pulling regulations and selecting the highest/safest value given in either is somehow bad/detrimental/wrong when dealing with steep inclines is at best stupid on your part.

Interpretation

2.—(1) In these Regulations, unless the context otherwise requires—

 

“lifting operation” has the meaning given in regulation 8(2);

8.—(2) In this regulation “lifting operation” means an operation concerned with the lifting or lowering of a load.

 

You will note it dose not say anything about ground contact or lack of it or that lifting only takes place in the vertical plane of gravity, just merely lifting or lowering, so following logic & forces then above 45deg the predominant direction of movement is up/down rather than horizontally (besides mass elements) and the load is being controlled by an attachment above it.

 

Wow, how right you are, clearly it doesn’t say anything about the item

leaving the ground so you must be right,…….. no wait, perhaps they didn’t feel the need to mention it leaving the ground because it is the lifting regulations and as such blatantly obvious.

also worth noting that on all winch packaging/ instructions it clearly states the winch is not to be used for lifting/ lowering..

Not covered by LOLER

But is covered by PUWER

Many company,s adhere to Puwer by implementing LOLER

IE if it needs ispecting under PUWER the easiest legislation that covers it is LOLER and takes the fact that how it may be used out of the equation

Also LOLER does cover LIFTING Lowering and SUSPENDING so B110 would IMO be correct on the Steep slope

Ie if the winch was taken off would it slip slide or fall

 

 

But like a lot of things open to interpretation

But to cover all arses an examination every 12 months is not asking too much
