hello all at arbtalk i am sure this topic has come up manytimes before but i would like to ask the people their opnion.

i am currently an outdoor instructor and have halped with a local tree surgeon a few times mainly humping and dumping wood but watching what he is doing as well.

:confused1:i would like to get in to arb but dont know what route to choose.

1. find a firm and work from the ground up and gain practical experience in the real world *my prefered choice*

2. an intensive college course to gain my tickets and some experience.

will the 2nd one help me get a job as i will have tickets and some experience or will the 1st be the better option and what are the chances of it happening.

i am going too be based in norfolk by the looks of it. i am currently in the lakedistrict on a seasonal contract.

many thanks in advance

Welcome Ian.

I would suggest doing as much part time as you can for local firms to see if you really like it or not.Buying your own Harness might make it a bit more likely for someone else to "give you a go" one day.

Generally speaking Employers hire a person to fill a role immeadiatly, not grown into one.

The industry has not shortage of recently qualified but inexperianced Climbers.Proving your ability to Graft is more important.

I think work is the best way to learn in this industry IMO college can only teach you so much.

Apprenterships are the way forward I think you get the best of both worlds there not easy to come by but do some ringing around local firms asking for experience for free at first to prove yourself if they like you they should offer you an apprenterhsip.

best of luck
