Tie the butt to the remaining stem- tension if possible. The nibble away- branches not under tension first

 

Exactly what I would have done.

 

Tie off the heavy end...trim out the light end. The cuts become more obvious as you get into the job.

yep, safest way would be a tirfor on one of those trees in the background, doesnt look like a huge amount of holding wood to rip off

Tirors definately have their place though, used one the previous day to get a grassed wheeled tractor up a steep bank.

in the forestry trade this is a widow maker. trunk still joined to butt twisted and under tention. more workers used to be killed on windblow trees than any outher tree tasks. i also agree with pete start atthe crown stay safe on the outside and work in you will then see how much tention you have.

No need to get close.

 

Throw a rope over the fallen stem and tie it off with a running bowline from distance. Then attach a winch to the rope and pull it away.

 

A throwbag or hook can get the rope in place without having to get close.

i like to take a little bit off at a time working with the safest area first aways removing the limbs above you head where possible and remembering to think after each cut if this fell or rolled which way is it gonna go. a bit like kerplunk take a stick out and reaccess....BUT, the book says the safest and proper way is attach a winch and pull it off if possible ?
