i had the same problem with my 800 year old oak.

 

Here are the pics of the job i did on Saturday...

 

This is a Sweet Chestnut with major dead wood; it was planted around 1600 and the owner wanted to try and save it.

 

Sorry no photos of it done ,phone ran out of memory.

i had the same problem with my 800 year old oak.

 

First tree of the day !Cant belive i get paid to do this ,had to footlock back up, the knot in the end of my rope mysteriously came undone and left my cambium saver up there! I had another chestnut to deadwood but when mike got up there it had a woodpeckers nest with a couple of chicks in so he came down and left it well alone.

will that tree survive now? or just slowly die without causing problems?

I hope it sorts it out but it could go either way ,there was only a few inches left in 1 place, the horses had ring -barked nearly all the way round:mad1:

I suppose it's a good thing the owner was keen to try and save it and not just fell it!

oh yeah i wasnt contradicting the work you did, obviously best to try and save it, saw the ring bark on it i think, looks pretty bad. but considering what you had to work with i think its a very good job. looks liek its on private grounds away from foot pathes ect, could it not be left how it was but fenced off?
