Fair observation Rob, as the species lends itself readily to delaminating, it would make an interesting case study to see if the majority of the lateral fractures they suffer were at the exact sweet spot of tension and compression within the branch structure ie; toward the top of the branch (most probable I'd imagine) or relatively random as photos of such appear to show.......

I'll do a bit of an observation as I am coming across dozens of hazard beams in all shapes and sizes and near enough all are willow.

 

Without seeing the trees before the failures, it would be difficult to ascertain the exact sweet spot. I'm finding lots of fairly fresh ones, most likely due to the recent winds.

 

I'll start taking the camera out to get better pics of some of these and others I've come across.

 

I have seen plenty potential hazard beams and some that have cracked slightly but since occluded. It's the strong upward curve in most willows that seems to attribute to the number of them that I'm finding, aswell as the readiness to fail.
