But can't oak make pure stands? And what about atlantic oak woodland - are these habitats not pre 1600 with 'ancient semi natural' characteristics?

man has manipulated his environment for thousands of years.

 

The fact is those oak woodlands of which you speak, take wistmans wood dartmoor for instance, regen only occurs on the fringes, NOT within the wood itself.
