i heard a very strange way today how to clean flue of soot etc.

Apparently this chap reckoned if you burn the odd empty beer tin it contains certain materials that when burned clears the chimney of soot, tar etc 1st time i have heard of this but saying that when i go to visit an aunt and uncle who are farmers when he provides the odd can or 2 of boddys he says just throw them onto the fire when you are finished??????

sound better than the advice from one of my farming neighbours who simply advised "flaming it through" with a little red diesel.

Got to love the agricultural approach to life!

Not related to cleaning a flue but I do remember lighting a garden incinerator with a splash of unleaded. Worked fine a few times; then I tried it once after the fire had gone out but the incinerator was still warm.

It "lit" well, as I'd half expected it to, seeing as I was aware enough to be stood about five feet away and throw the match in. Problem was that it lit with an effing loud crump, blew half the materials all over the yard and left me half deaf and a bit dazed for the next few minutes!

Works mate. Makes the tar powdery so it dosent stick. Wont clean it out, but definately helps to prevent it in the first place. You will see the difference in the stove, it wont be clumpy lke it normally is, just a fine dust. Keeps the door windows cleaner aswell if you have them. God knows why, but it does work :thumbup1:

When i worked on the estate and had an estate house I cut a Christmas tree out of the plantation and used it taped to drain rods, it did't work. Apparently in the main house they use to drop a holly bush attached to a cannon ball from the roof, but I think they were pulling my leg about that
