The best log splitter

I would prob talk to Riko (I think his name is Chris).

I got a Thor road towable (fast tow) farmer 11 ton.... pretty disappointed. A friend of a friend swore by them hence I got one...

Instructions were shocking - almost none existant. It's really designed for vertical use - which involves a lot of fiddling about IMO.

In the horozontal logs fall onto the hydraulic pipe and onto the mudguards. There's nothing to pull the log off if it gets stuck on the splitting head, the splitting head stops a good few inches short of the base (needs something you can slot a thick piece of plywood (that is also easily replaceable) into so the splitting axe can travel all the way through the log). You need tray tables on either side so you're not bending down all the time.

I wanted something that I towed to a pile of logs, process em and off I go. Like a chipper with a pile of brash. This log splitter falls a long way short of doing that.

On the plus point the actual build quality is good but it just feels whoever designed it doesn't do a lot of log splitting.

Whatever you buy stay away from £800 - £1200 chinese towable splitters that you see on ebay.

they are made with steel that is only marginally stronger than a bar of chocolate, they take too long to cycle, every conceivable nut / bolt / fastening will quickly work loose, hydraulic couplings leak no matter how tight they are and worst of all they are unstable when towed above 10 mph even when billed as road towable. (mine went over whilst cornering at 5mph, hitch had failed by cup deforming and coming off ball)

Stick with something european.

I have the thor 13T road towable

Chose this as it does logs over 3ft, I split into billets and then stack for seasoning.

Takes less than 10 mins to set up in vertical position which is the only position I use it in. Made a few tables for splitting smaller logs.

Bit pricey but wouldn't complain about it

As the others have said - for £5k you'd get an awful lot of splitter. You could either go for something mid sized and basic and have a good bit of change or go for a high spec mid size or a basic big machine.

We have a few options available for petrol road tow - best bet at the mo is drop an email for my attention to [email protected] with a bit more info and I'll see what I can do :thumbup1:
