If your welding thin sheet metal and having trouble blowing thru position the work piece at about 30 degrees and stove down hill pulling rather than pushing the torch to control penetration as your arcing into the weld pool rather than directly onto metal

That MIG looks ideal.

One little tip, dump the noddy earth clamp and make your own from a pair of mole grips and some copper sheet, you'll notice the difference a really sound earth connection makes.

I have jammed copper pipe over the jaws of the earth, which has made a big difference, particularly when they are rubbed with steel wool before starting.

How thick is the steel that you will be welding on the crane?

Since that would be the most critical bit of welding you will be doing make sure you get it right!:thumbup1:

With the mig does come the problem with gas, you either need to get an account with someone like boc or try and nick a pub co2 bottle of someone, the co2 works better than most say it does, well ime.

Or use the gasless wire, it doesnt weld as good but if your mainly welding outside then you will probably want to use that instead of gas.

Oh and then you will probably need a new regular for the full size gas bottles.

Its just one of those things, before you know it youve spent £500!:001_smile:

Not a bad choice but I would go with this if you can bag it

CEBORA 130 TURBO MIG WELDER on eBay (end time 12-Sep-10 20:05:17 BST)

The model has been around for a long time, tried and tested. It also comes badged up as BOC and Snap on.

Thanks for that Andy:thumbup1:I did consider it but me being me couldn't wait so I went out and bought a gasless mig that has the option of fitting gas should I need it at a later stage of my new found welding career...:laugh1:

Thanks for all your tips lads, if it weren't for you lot and Arbtalk I'd have bought the wrong bit of kit.....In the end I paid £235 for the Clarke 130EN.
