hi all,

been asked to price for a load of work, part of which is to grass over an area of limestone hardcore.

my question is......

how much depth of topsoil would the grass need to grow without the limestone killing it,

and would it be better turfed, or seeded.

thanks in advance, dave

the harcaore is 2' deep, and the clieent wants it leaving

its at the entrance to a power station, and there is a chance that they may have to run wagons over it sometime in the future.

i would use 5 to 6 inches of topsoil then turf it.

2" of hardcore will not make a difference to trucks passing over it, it will need way more than that if there is a possible chance in the future.

I'm guessing that's why there's 2'....... I'd say you'd need to put a membrane down and then topsoil, not sure how much though. Could you do a ph test on a sample area?

Grass will grow in limestone without soil if you leave it long enough I'll put up a pic of my yard to prove it :laugh1: I'd probably put 4-6 " of top soil down and use a drought resistant seed mixture to be on the safe side
