But why are forestry cuts, which are all about conserving timber, taught and used for Arb, which is all about getting the tree down in the safest and most cost effective manner.

 

I an still waiting for someone to tell me why small gobs are better, for any other reason than saving timber???

Big gob= longer hold= more control of fell IMO.

I would say width of hinge is more crucial than depth of gob

I agree with that; small gobs aren't particularly appropriate for anything else; big gobs and high stumps are big no-nos where I always did my cutting. Waste of timber is most likely the only reason other than high stumps fouling extraction machinery. It's a long time since I was in full time thinnings but our gobs were absolutely tiny - often only an inch or so deep / high! But then this was on <18" dbh timber.
