Looking for table sized slabs

I am looking for some wide slabs to make tables from. In particular looking for burr oak, walnut, elm and regular oak in exceptional sizes. Would be interested to hear of anything that you may have in stock. I will be driving around the country picking up some pieces within the month. Understand it is all special stuff and you are going to make me pay for it.

 

would be good to hear what you have + rough dimensions if possible

Within the next couple of weeks I will be milling some very large oak for a cabinet maker I work with. It's somewhere in the region of 4ft and a bit wide and whatever length is specified. It won't be dried though - that is something you will have to sort yourself.

Your post is a good point - other woodworkers out there could drown in the wood available from tree surgeons with mills on this forum !

As follows pics and dimensions:

 

1) Oak 33" by 8ft by 1 3/4"

2) Oak 32" by 8ft by 1 3/4" (some burring)

3) Oak 37" by 8ft by 2 1/2" (chunk out due to nail:sneaky2:) some brown colouring in center.

4) Oak 33" by 8ft by 2 1/2"

 

5) Oak 33" by 5ft 3" by 2 1/2"

6) Oak 32" by 5ft 5" by 2 1/2"

7) Oak 26" by 5ft 3" by 2 1/2"

 

Obviously all these large planks have splits etc. but no weakness style shakes.

 

8) Black poplar - 38" by 9ft 6" by 4". Very stable no splits or tears.

 

All the above is around 18% to 22% Moisture content.

 

9) Black walnut 26" by 4ft 6" by 3" - sawn yesterday (x4 of - some included bark in 2 of the planks).

 

10) Atlas cedar - 30" by 8ft by 3" - recently sawn (x 6 of)

 

For the large oak slabs will be between £80-00 and £120-00 + vat

 

Black poplar will be £120-00 each + vat

 

Black walnut will be £140-00 each + vat green or £220-00 + vat each dry (going in the kiln today).

 

Cedar £80-00 each (forgot to get pics of!)

 

 

 

But will a do a discount on above prices if you have a few bits from me.

Some beautiful timber there Rob.

 

As I am sure that you already know Maverick, the issue with any slab is that you invariably have to take out the pith to minimise movement of the timber once in a piece of furniture. More often than not it's better to create a piece with smaller boards to give it a better chance of stability.

Thankyou, will be in touch in the next couple of weeks. I am looking for some dry at the moment for a table I have got to do very soon. I am planning on starting to buy more green timber to dry myself though, so keep me posted on anything interesting that you are milling and I might come and pick it up.
