i'm pretty sure you can't splice used ropes...?

 

Used ropes are splicable. It just depends how old and used the rope is as to how hard it will be to splice! Just needs a bit more elbow grease:001_tongue:.

 

As far as ropes and splices go.

 

Deffinatly a spliced eye and any rope but marlow gecko!! haha. Yale xtc is a very nice rope has as been said by many.

Some good points have already being made. When I started climbing in 1970's ( rock that is, I've only recently taken to the trees) we were taught the bowline as the standard attachment knot. It's a great knot because of easy of untying and because you can, with practise tie it one-handed. As has been said, its eminently sensible to put a 'stopper' knot on the working end (most climbers use a thumb knot). The rewoven figure 8 is now the standard tie in because it has the great advantage of being very difficult to get wrong! Whilst a spliced eye is stronger in all respects than a knot its good to learn these basic tie-in knots by rote because you will at some point need to improvise in the field. Its good to buy the best gear you can afford: usually the most expensive! Good gear generally pays off at some point and if nothing else it just makes life and little better

personaly i would never have a figure 8/ double8 loop on the end of a climbing line as its very hard to undo once its been loaded. There's nothing worse than pulling your rope back through a crotch and getting it jammed, a bowline is easy to undo and tie again saving a lot of hassle.

 

If you want to back up a bowline use the water bowline instead, it doesn't come undone and yet is easy to tie and undo. I use it on my rigging line.

 

I have a spliced eye on my climbing line though...

buy a single spliced, try it and if you prefer using a knot on the other end cut the splice off

in answer to your question, go for a splice every day of the week & i wold have said gecko is as good as any other 13mm line but would be intreeged to know what it is about gecko they dont like? especially when they say the Yale (a v.similar rope in the field) is better? Out of the 100's of clients i loler inspect i can't say i've had one that has ever used/bought gecko slate it.

I much prefer a bowline than spliced eye, especially on trees where there's the chance your rope end will catch in a tight fork when ascending or retrieving your rope at the end of a climb . Having the option to untie can save alot of grief.
