Hi all,

I will be doing my cs38/39 very soon at Myerscough College.

Does anyone know what knots are to be demonstrated on assessment?

Is it just bowline, prusik, figure eight?

Also in the details of cs38 it says you MUST be able to identify Oak, Beech, Ash, Birch, Sycamore, Willow, Lime, Horse Chestnut, Poplar and others...

Im learning to ID more & more, and have my head in my collins tree guide but if i give a wrong Tree ID on ass essment could i fluff the test?

Thanks for any replys:001_smile:

They'll run through it all and prepare you well for assesment, just make sure you take note of what is being said.

As for tree ID well you really ought to be able to identify the common ones above, but it's unlikely you'll fluff it if you mess one up, they'll more than likely just ask you what tree your climbing....

yeah look on the internet also for tree ID, as books give you the 'ideal world' example. So get on the internet and look for other pics, even ask on here for pics as you will get a better understanding of the variations that single species can do.

They should ask for a 3 knot (closed) system, they did on mine, which is bowline to blakes hitch and figure 8 stopper knot.

Hi there the main thing is to Enjoy and Enjoy it I loved every minute of my test .Out of all the NPTCs so far this one is the FUN one . I a great examiner too he was a jolly chap that put you at ease before you did each bit so that made it really nice .I was a bit scared on the rescues as these were new for me learn in a few days. but all was well I just took my time with it .

They will ask you to demonstrate the 3 knot system but you don't have to climb on it if you don't want to they will just ask you to show it works then you can climb on your normal system if you want to . I did this

I had to indent 10 tree so just concentrate on those for the assessment

. In the training we had the same sheet of trees and pictures as person testing us on the day .The sheet of trees you get to learn will be the same on the test just without the names by them so don't worry just get your friends to test each other and all will be well .

Have a good read over the questions but again these will be asked in context to what you are doing at the time so they may ask you what might you need to look out for before you start to climb your tree ,its lightly you will be standing at the tree you are going to climb and have been there all week so it makes it easy for you to point out all the things to the examiner. A similar format is lightly to happen for most of the questions . If a question is not in context and you are struggling just walk over on your site to where your question becomes into context then you can answer on a visual ques.

The new Pole rescue is wicked fun and not difficult to do just take your time and place the spikes carefully this was the best bit of the test for me

Good luck and don't worry

All the best

i had to demonstrate bowline, prussic, figure 8, figure 8 loop.. and i think that's it. possibly butterfly too.

i did not have to demonstrate any tree ID knowledge in my assessment.

Same as. When i done mine they were dead keen on the on site risk assessments and all the health and safety info that you have in the hand book. Good luck if i can do it anyone can:lol::thumbup:

I found the hardest parts were the stuff thats not all that common at work risk assesments and all the formalities, Riddor etc. so stay sharp on all that. you only need to tie the knots you climb with prussik and a bowline i guess. and the 3 knot system or whatever its called when you make a climbing system all out of just your climbing rope.

I only had to ID a few tree's in the area we were climbing and these seemed like random off the cuff questions rather than 'serious assesment' stuff, but saying that it was all very chilled out and the same guy had taught me for 30 and 31. Just relax and enjoy it, i guess your not at work yet so you wont have any bad habits to slip into mid assesment so yuou should be fine.

  • 4 weeks later...

I did my 38 a couple of weeks ago, as long as you know the knots your going to climb on and the 3 knot system your covered. For the pole rescue you will need a cow hitch and an italian hitch/similar.

Identification is new in the test, you will be asked 5 or 6 including the tree your climbing. Dont sweat it a lad on my course got oak wrong and still passed =/
