Sorry Bob, haven't seen your post till now.

 

I've ended up with a Canon EF-S 17-85mm IS-USM and a Sigma 70-210mm 1:4-5.6 UC-II

 

I think I need to go to the newsagaents and buy a Photography for beginners magazine because all those numbers mean nothing to me apart from the focal lengths which I know from gun sights.
