Camera lense question

It's also worth remembering, Dean, that the sensor on your 40D increases a lens' range by a factor of 1.6.

So a 28mm-135mm lens will perform like a 45-216mm lens.

You loose on the wide angle and gain on the telephoto.

not if he goes for ef-s rsange lenses! which are made specificaly for aps sized sensors!

You are correct, Hama, about the dedicated design of the EF-S cameras - but the lens (even the EF-S ones) is still labelled in the 'traditional' form ie. for 35mm or fill sized sensors.

Basicaly dean your camera has a sensor the size of an old aps format film negative. whereas from a canon 5d upwards you get a full frame (35mm film format) sized sensor.

if you use ef lenses designed for the old film sizes you get a 10% gain at the telephoto end and a 10% loss at the wide end of the lenses range.

EF-S range lenses are designed to remove this issue, so you should buy these, but the ef lenses will still operate on your camera.

I got a Sigma DG 70-300 to fit my Canon 400D which is good if you are a long way away or bloody close to use the macro side. Good value and I was advised to get Sigma rather than Canon.

At the moment I'm looking for another lense for my camera, but dont know what I want, I do know I want a zoom with Image stabilisation

I have got a Canon 40d with a Sigma 17-35mm lense for portrait close up stuff

I am wanting something like 20-100 I think for longer range stuff ??

In other words what do I need

I’ve just bought a 70-200 Nikon Dean, its got image stabilisation and so-far the results are good. I was tempted to go for the pro model (all manufactures have a pro range) but couldn’t justify the big spend at the time.
