Trailer reg plate

I've just got a small trailer for my car to tow. What is the law on registration plates and can I get away with a home made one until I get a proper one?

 

Where do you get proper ones?

Should have a proper 1 but a lot of people don't bother. You will need your reg documents to get 1 made up.

As above. I have had one which is made up of stick on letters for about 5 years. Strictly illegal, but nothing has ever been said.

i think halfauds will do one single rear plate without logbook

some companys will

i think you only need a logbook to get a pair or atleast a front one

I think you may be mistaken Dent...i am pretty sure you need v5 plus ID in most places, front or rear. I tried to get one for the chipper and ran into these probs.

Last time I got rear plates made up (about 3 weeks ago) I had to present the V5 and personal ID.

Most places, even our local dealer (where we go 3-4times a wee!!) ask for a driving license too!

I got fined some years ago even tho the plate on the chipper was registered to a GreenMech lorry and I was in a GreenMech car. It has to be a "regular" plate and relating to the towing vehicle.
