After trying to ring up a very large tree made from 6" nails this week, I've decided to buy the metal detector I have been supposedly buying for the last 5 years.

It has cost me a fortune in chains this week and in the end I have had to leave the stem on site.

I dont want one of them wands, I am after a short squat type detector sort of a mini version of a full size one.

Does anyone know if they do such a thing?

I'm after something that will detect to abouyt 12" if poss

BTW I have used up my yearly allowance of swear words this week

Also worth it for finding lost nuts, washers, tongs, watches, etc, etc.

Or when a nut/ bolt etc finds its way to falling off a machine in someones garden. Could save ages of grass searching on hands and knees.:thumbup1:

Handy things those metal detectors . My eldest bought one two years ago . He uses it to find money after the local rotary bonfire and charity fayres have finished . Sometimes hes does well . Never shares mind you

Came across a little hand one on ebay described as "Untested".

In other words not working.

I bid on it and got it for £4, worth a look at I thought.

Got it and sure enough, it was a non runner. So had a look and found the on off switch on the circuit board had fallen to bit so, desoldered it, araldited the peg back on and hey presto, a cheap working detector.

The red arrow shows where I've aradited the on/off peg back on the switch, micro surgery when you look at the battery at the side for size comparison

I'll give it a run and see how deep it scans later.

BTW, those detectors that Rob D uses are simply cut down full size detectors

All you do is move the console down, the shaft, cut off the rear handle and move the hand grip onto the shaft  and you'll get one half the price for doing it yourself.
