Footlock strop / Brummel splice

I've got some Samson Ice tail to make a footlock strop out of and I'm going to splice two eyes in using brummel and a short bury.

 

A few questions:

 

Getting the length of the strop right.... last time I measure up underneath my chin and doubled it which was about right when the termination knots were put in, I think it was 1.6m doubled which gave me a length of rope to start with of 3.2m.

 

Is there a rough formula or guide for footlock strop length or is it try and see?

 

Secondly, the Brummel...

 

Is it enough to send the long end through form your eye then send the short end through and bury or do I need to send the long end through a second time, I've just tried it with just one of each and it's solid as a rock.

 

How short a bury can I get away with if I lockstitch the bury, I'm planning on a 5 or 6 inch bury which seems pretty long.

that brummell is spot on.

 

as for the length you'll have to play and see. i made a footloop strop out of some tenex with a whoopie type sling. that isn't much use to you though

A footlock strop is just an extra long eye to eye prussic cord which you use as a friction hitch to ascend a static line by footlocking up it.

 

Perhaps someone may have a picture ??

a fid length is 21 x diameter as a general rule i believe

Do you need some whipping twine dean

Liking it a lot, and it makes we want to have a go, especially after downloading the PDF of what a Brummel & Bury splice is.
