Ed's right there. Next problem is weight. 6" turntable and under 750Kgs. Wouldn't last long would it!!!!!!!!

How about a side (pavement) fed and diesel engine, single axle, sub 750kg, but built better than Mike would think.

I would sooner have a turntable than a fixed model. The new engine certainly allows for more iron eh pete?

In small chippers weight is king IMO, petrol engines are the only way i can see of building a substantial chipper below 750kg (with or without a turntable). The compramise i guess is the fuel bill and servicing issues, but power if the unit is selected carefully should not be an issue.

thats why small chippers just don't need them, plus i prefer a low feed height. I guess it's a lazy thing

a low loading height is far from being lazy! We've been unfortunate enough to use a Gandini shreader in the past and the hopper is very high its bloody hardwork loading it!

 

I take it everyone wants a chipper under 750kg to avoid confusion with driving licences of younger employees or do a lot of you use 7.5tonners? Or am I misssing something else?

I've done a lot of study recently into Petrol Vs diesel. A petrol engine will use no more than a diesel engine, for a given power output. Red diesel is cheap, but you will never get full power output from it.

 

We have some of the very latest 38hp Kohler engines, and they are fantastic. the V twin has a great torque curve, is a piece of cake to service, and costs half of its diesel counterpart. They come with roller bearing cranks, so longevity is not an issue either. What it will enable us to do, is build a 750kgs chipper with plenty of Iron in it, at a reasnoble price.

Petrol engine is ok but depends on use. We have one customer who traded from Entec CH25PH to Schliesing200MX. The savings in fuel from petrol to red pays his finance. You can't get away from the fact petrol is the best part of a fiver a gallon. Anything over 10 hours a week and it has to be diesel. £50 v upto £20. Thats a min of £1560 per year. 4 yr life of average chipper ownership = £6240. Last nail in coffin for petrol chipper is Diesel chippers always depreciate less than equiv petrol machines. So sorry but diesel always wins for me. Petrol will save money on new cost but it will hit back.

I agree with what your saying mike, but I think there is still a market for petrol powered machines.
