Does any one run there mog on veg oil?

With the continued confusion with regard to red diesel,increasing cost of red and the 2500 L annual duty free allowance on veg oil.

 

Plus the environmental considerations.

 

I was wondering about switching to veg.

 

Any advice,experience would be very much appreciated :icon14::wave:

 

P.S.would my Disco 3 TD be OK? would it void its warranty?

I would say from a mechanical point the mog should be ok on veg, but i deffo wouldnt put it in the disco:scared:

 

From what i gather about the more modern engines, anything with a management system on it, the injectors have much smaller holes (supposed to be more efficient) and can block when run on veg.

 

I know the Td5 doesnt like it.

 

Dont know about the tax issue though............

I would pay duty on all but the 2500L allowance,this would also allow me to do things with the mog that I can't on red.:icon14:

 

Once you have paid all the costs and the tax on making your own bio diesel it comes to about 68p per litre.... You can have it delivered in an IBC tank to your house for £750 for 1000ltr.. If you way it up including the costs of equipment , about £1250 + your labour your probably best buying it in by the IBC load...:icon14:

NO NO NO Don't do it:scared:! don't try running a TDV6 Disco on Veg oil! You'll have all manner of trouble, screw the warranty up an be in a right mess!

 

I was chatting to a bloke from LR Assist recently I quote him "if you can afford a Disco/Rangie/sport you can afford to tax and fuel it!"

 

i don't necessarily agree but its a reasonable point

There is a slight confusion in this thread between bio-diesel and vegetable oil.

Bio diesel is usually made from waste vegetable oil, and is refined and has stuff added to it, such as methanol, to make it as chemically similar to petroleum diesel fuel as possible.

Vegetable oil is just that, pure veg oil.

You could probably run the mog on pure veg oil, which should cost around 50p a litre. This would be duty free, and come under your 2500 litre exemption certificate.

If you buy bio-diesel from a reputable supplier, it will be duty paid and therefore require no exemption, but will cost around 80-85ppl, depending on the quantity purchased.

If you use veg oil you have to half it with diesel or the viscocity (dont know if spelt right) will be to thick unless it is nice and warm, you can be a tank heater but again added expense..... If you do the sums using veg oil in this way is about the same price as bio diesel but then if you use alot you have to declare it , more expense and complication. If you look at the +' and -'s bio diesel comes out on top..
