really :confused1: i thought chain speed was dictated by engine RPM and the drive sproket size, yes it will accelerate better but i dont think the chain speed will be any faster

well you may well be right. im just thinking since the chain hasnt got to travel as far its going to go faster surely. think about it on a bigger scale 42" bar for the husky 3120 will that chain will go same speed as if you put a 20" bar on the 3120 well maybe im wrong i dont mind either way

The chain will be travelling at the same speed, it will just make more revolutions than a longer one.

but surely if you have the same engine pumping a 42" chain its got alot more drag than same engine pumping it round a 20" bar.

Yeh, I see your point.

With no load, the chain speeds will be the same.

Under load the chain speed would be higher on a smaller bar as you have the drag of less cutters at any one time.:thumbup1:

Wont change the chain speed as this is dictated by engine revs and sprocket size,it will rev up slightly faster as less inertia in the chain,it will help it cut a bit faster, but realy that depends on how many teeth in the kerf/diameter of log, both chains will cut a 4'' log at roughly the same speed.
